KittyCat Creations teaming up with Operation Write Home

"Helping heros keep in touch with home", that is the motto for Operation Write Home. Operation Write Home is a wonderful organization that receives thousands of handmade greeting cards and distributes them to our troops over seas. Our troops receive these cards and are able to write a special message to send home to their loved ones.

Along with the greeting cards Operation Write Home includes "hero cards" in each shipment. These cards are sent with a personal message of gratitude from people like you and me. Many people accross the globe are hosting card signing parties. In November I will be hosting a card signing party at my job with over 100 employees! Below you will see a sneak peek of some cards I created this evening.

Another custom order complete. This one was a request from a Massage Therapist who wanted to give out FREE 60 Minute Massages as Birthday gifts. Oh, how I would love to be a recipient. I often feel we do not say it enough. Even more important I feel our actions need to be consistent and we should show our appreciation each and every day.

I am thankful for the air I breathe, the roof over my head, my health, happiness and the wonderful family and friends I have.

The Art of Paper Quilling

Quilling or paper filigree is an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs, according to Wikipedia. The paper is wound around a quill to create a basic coil shape. The paper is then glued at the tip and the coil shaped, these shaped coils are arranged to form flowers, leaves, and various ornamental patterns similar to ironwork.

I was at one of my favorite places one Saturday, the craft store. That is when I came across a book on paper quilling. I had always enjoyed creating scrapbooks and other crafts but had never seen anything like this before. At the time I was trying to teach myself to sew and make jewelry, so I decided I wouldn't purchase the book that day and instead focused on the other crafts I was pursuing.

Days passed and I continued to think about paper quilling and was overwhelmed by my desire to learn this art form. I finally gave in. I went back to the store and to my dismay the book was no where to be found. I returned home and went online searching for more information. That's when I came across the website Quilled Creations. I looked through many of the projects and supplies on the website and decided to make a purchase.

While waiting for the supplies, I continued to create jewelry. Then it came. The box of paper strips and all of the necessary tools to get started. I got to work right away. For an art form that appears so delicate and challenging, I was amazed just how quickly I caught on. So far I've quilled different objects and shapes applying them to personalized greeting cards and gift tags. This is a fun craft that can be combined with scrapbooking and other paper crafts. With the holidays approaching I'm looking forward to creating unique and festive cards that are colorful and great for the family.

Labor of Love

Just yesterday I took a wire wrapping class to advance my jewelry design to the next level. Different from traditional jewelry assembly, this is proving to be a bit hard on my hands. The project I started is a bracelet using some of the techniques I learned such as making headpins with an etruscan link and rosary turns. I found some great beads that are blue and purple in color depending on which way the light hits them. They are gorgeous and make me think of my cousin Teresa. Once completed this labor of love is for her.
